Hannah Barrett (she/her)

Intern Therapist, MSW (c) BSW RSW

As a single mom of two beautiful little boys living in my hometown of Ponoka, Alberta, I cherish quiet nights under the stars (despite missing city life). I thrive on travel, live music (over 100 shows and counting!), and baking for loved ones when time allows.

People close to me describe me as sarcastic, open-minded, and creative. I’m grateful for years of invaluable experience counseling kids, teens, and parents, fueled by my passion for child development and psychology.

In the last few years I have had the pleasure of guiding individuals on harm reduction and sobriety paths. I'm deeply committed to empowering addiction treatment methods and advocating for truth and reconciliation in allyship with Indigenous communities.

In therapy, I aim to celebrate your strengths, am driven to watch you reach goals, and challenge negative self-talk.

My “Go-To” Therapy Models

I graduated from high school in 2011 and knew immediately that I wanted to be a social worker, so I set off for The University of Calgary to get the best social work education the province had to offer.

I finished my bachelor’s degree in 2016 and then spent some time working for the Alberta Children’s Hospital before moving back to my old stomping grounds and working as a Family School Enhancement Counsellor for a local school board, where my passion for working with children and their families was born.

In 2018 I felt the call to join the fight against the opioid crisis and worked for several years doing counselling and case management for province-wide Virtual Opioid Dependency Program or VODP, where I had the opportunity to learn best practice for addiction medicine and treatment from an incredible team of doctors, nurses, and the hundreds of clients I had the pleasure of working with.

For the past two years I have been working as a Mental Health Liaison and Therapist with AHS in my home community.

I WANT TO FIRST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I LIVE AND PLAY ON TREATY 6 TERRITORY, THE ANCESTRAL LANDS OF THE DENE, CREE, NAKOTA SIOUX AND SAULTEAUX PEOPLES, AND HOME TO THE MÉTIS SETTLEMENTS AND THE MÉTIS NATION OF ALBERTA, REGIONS 2, 3 AND 4. I AM A SETTLER WITH IMMENSE GRATITUDE FOR THIS LAND, AND FOR THE TRADITIONAL PEOPLES WHO HAVE, AND DO RESIDE HERE. DESPITE THE MANY ATROCITIES EXPERIENCED ON THESE LANDS BY THE HANDS OF OUR GOVERNMENT, RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS, COLONIALISM, AND THE PROFOUND IMPACTS ON INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES’ MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL- BEING AS A RESULT OF THESE ATROCITIES, INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES REMAIN COMMITTED TO LEAVING THE WORLD BETTER THAN THEY FOUND IT AND CONTINUE TO HONOR AND BRING LIGHT TO THEIR VIBRANT CULTURE. I CALL ON YOU TO RECOGNIZE THAT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE ARE WORKING TO HEAL THEIR TRAUMAS, LEARN THEIR LANGUAGES, AND SUPPORT THEIR NATIONS TO GROW AND FLOURISH.

THERAPY SHOULD FEEL LIKE:

That “a-ha!” feeling you get when you realized what your favorite song from childhood was actually about!
